Fishing Gear To Catch Pike

Northern pike fishing requires a number of equipment which goes way beyond the usual elements like rods, lures, reels etc. No doubt these too are important, but any professional angler would be vouch for the fact that a lot more goes into making a complete pike fishing gear kit. Pikes are huge fishes and are not easy to catch. It takes a significant amount of time before one should even think of venturing out to capture one of these.

For starters, in order to catch this huge fish, an angler requires a strong fishing rod. Trust me; it is worth an investment even if it increases the budget by a small margin. Never opt for something that comes under the category of light action as they would never be able to handle the pressure applied when in tussle with the fish. If the experts are to be believed, a light action rod can be broken by a pike fish that weighs only 5 - 10 pounds and this is considered to be less than average size for this type of fish. Always prefer to buy a heavy action rod and a medium action in case the heavy is not available.

In order to catch a fish like pike, the angler would need bait that suits its liking. Because they are ambush predators, an obvious choice would be a crank or magnum rapalas. Other options include big surface spinners, rattles, blinkers etc. The idea is to use something that catches their attention and also frustrates them enough to attack. Remember that using the right kind of lure is very important in order to make a successful hunt. Pikes do not come near small baits like worms or those which don't move. This is one topic which can be elaborated to such details that even 30 pages won't be enough. Nevertheless, try and make the right choice.

As for the reels, try and opt for a closed or an open faced reel. The reason is pretty simple, these reels are designed with much more precision and as a result the line tangles less. You would easily be able to judge how well the line is holding up. Because they do not jam, it would be of great convenience when in the middle of a tussle with the pike. For those who might not be that experienced or are not so confident, a very good equipment to buy is fishing net. Using a net made from strong and reliable materials can go a long way in helping capture a giant pike. If we consider a 35 pound pike, a walleye is never going to be enough.

As added measures, buy yourself a pair of hand gloves and nose pliers. They come in very handy when actually catching and handling the fish. The gills of pikes are very sharp and can lead to a deep cut in the fingers. Unless you are very lucky, you would be getting stitches. Further, if the area is dirty, you are looking at an infection which can then keep you away from fishing for a long time.
